Welcome to another CSI+ Meet the Member Interview! In this interview, we are joined by Johnathan J. Styles, AIA, NCARB, IIDA Project Architect & Interior Designer at MOYA Design Partners (MOYA).
What do you do at your company and in what circumstances would I come to you for something?
“At MOYA, I serve as a Project Architect and Interior Designer. Our approach is rooted in providing professional design services, which we’ve now extended to marine interior design. With our entry into marine design, we aim to meet the evolving needs of cruise operators, vendors, outfitters, and other stakeholders. While we may be new to the marine sector, our roots in community-centric design run deep. What do we mean by community-centric design as it relates to marine interiors? We understand that even before a passenger purchases a ticket to sail, through embarkation, during their cruise, on disembarkation day and beyond – they immediately become part of a community. As designers we create experiences. Those experiences, if we are successful, should make the passenger feel like they are a well-looked-after member of the community. They should be longing to come back (time and time again) and bring their friends! For us, community-centric design is an essential part of fostering brand loyalty. You would come to me for anything related to architecture and interior design, especially if you need innovative and forward-thinking solutions. Our team offers a wide variety of services such as Interior Design, Master planning, Visual Design – just to name a few.”
What inspired you to pursue this field of work?
“My first time on a cruise was in 1993, however, I really became fascinated by this industry at age 12, when I began drawing cruise ships by hand. The ocean and the unique environment of cruise ships captivated me—they represent both a journey and a destination, offering freedom and enjoyment without limitations while in motion. I was fascinated by the great ocean liners of the past. They embodied a unique sense of hope, opulence, luxury and optimism. Anything and everything seemed possible. Paradise realized in floating steel and glass. By the time I went on my first large-scale cruise at 16, I knew this was something I wanted to do. I started analyzing the ship’s construction and imagining how to design more realistic and functional spaces. For a time, I considered becoming an oceanographer, but the idea of designing the spaces on these mini-cities at sea was more appealing to me. My professional background in hospitality, restaurants, event spaces, multifamily, and lifestyle design has given me a unique perspective and a diverse skillset that I now bring to marine design.”
Do you have a fun-fact or piece of advice about your company/industry that you can share?
“We love a good happy hour at MOYA! If you’re ever in the DC area, especially during a soccer match, join us for a fun and relaxed time. Or join us online for a cocktail making workshop! Did I also mention we are an office of foodies?! As for a piece of advice: It may sound a bit cliché, but thinking outside of the box is perhaps truer in the marine interiors industry, than in most other industries. The cruise industry is bound by numerous regulations and limitations, yet somehow, we find ways to create the most spectacular and innovative designs. Despite the constraints, we strive to make the most amazing and imaginative ideas come to life, demonstrating that with creativity and determination, anything is possible.”
Do you specialise in a particular type of product? What makes it different to competitors?
“Our design approach is heavily research-driven and emphasizes diversity. While we may be new to marine design, our expertise in land-based projects, particularly in hospitality, sets us apart. We bring fresh perspectives and cutting-edge design solutions that cater to the evolving needs of the cruise industry.”
What role does sustainability play in your company? How do you incorporate environmentally friendly practices and materials?
“Sustainability is central to MOYA’s mission. We are committed to creating designs that meet current needs while protecting the environment for future generations. Our approach to sustainability incorporates biophilic elements by utilizing eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient systems, and innovative and cost-effective technologies that minimize environmental impact. We incorporate green building practices and sustainable solutions in every project, promoting a healthier planet. By prioritizing sustainability, we contribute to the global effort to combat climate change and advocate for a greener, more resilient built environment.”
